About the Role
The Market Analysis & Economics (MAE) team is BHP’s in-house research and analysis unit, and we provide our stakeholders with thought leadership and impactful foresight. Our analytical works reduce complexity, inspire confidence and enable value. We aspire to be the best analytical & foresight function bar none, and a great place to work.
We are looking to hire a Metals Analyst to join our team. You will be responsible for metals analysis with the focus on two commodities - copper and nickel. You are expected to provide forecasts on key end-use sectoral demand with deep-dives in the global copper value-chain and battery supply chain. This position will be influential in forming BHP’s view of long-term metals demand and price outlook, to inform BHP’s strategic planning and commercial decisions.
In this role you will
- Demonstrates an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
- Demonstrates commitments to the BHP Values and Code of Business Conduct.
- Develops and maintains robust copper demand forecasts for China, with a deep understanding of global copper value chain. Also to maintain a reliable nickel demand forecast that covers the battery raw material supply chain.
- Support market analysis for by-products of BHP’s copper production (e.g. Molybdenum, Zinc)
- Develop and maintain Power BI Dashboards to serve the regular data needs of various stakeholders.
- Works closely with the Commercial teams with short-term market analysis to inform key commercial decisions.
- Collaborates with Portfolio and Strategy Development Team to build long-term commodity price outlook for portfolio decisions
- Supports to strategic decision-making by Minerals Australia and Minerals America (Assets)
- Establishes and maintains a very strong network within the resources/energy industry.
- Contributes to BHP Billiton’s thought leadership endeavors.
- Engages constructively with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Assists the Vice President Market Analysis and Economics, and leaders of the Commercial function with projects as required.
About You
Qualifications
Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with postgraduate qualifications preferred.
Experience & Technical Competencies
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in commodity research and analysis, with experiences in copper and other base markets preferred.
- Able to extract actionable insights under conditions of uncertainty and time pressure.
- Good data and modelling skills (Excel, Power BI)
- Extended research network in mineral commodity sector
- Advanced written and spoken communication skills in English.
